Hahaha.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger21125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-518410090820851537.post-36398233311548982172014-08-26T19:05:00.000-07:002014-08-26T19:10:31.872-07:00In Memory of Richard AttenboroughMany of you must have heard already that Sir Richard Attenborough passed away on Sunday, August 24th. I don't know if anyone reads this blog, but I am posting these words because I feel like I have to say them to someone.<br />
<br />
I have never been a movie buff, so my knowledge on classic movies is very limited - I have yet to and look forward to seeing more of Richard Attenborough's work in front of and behind the camera. But "John Hammond", the character he played in Jurassic Park, has resonated with me ever since I saw the movie when I was a kid. To me, his character embodied eternal optimism and a complete disbelief in the concept of "impossible" - exactly the kind of person I wanted to become. I imagined myself in the distant future wearing a white beard, using a cane with a mosquito encased in amber, doing everything I always dreamed of - just like John Hammond did.<br />
<br />
This past year and a half I worked on a single project, day in and day out (I even left my job to work on it). Inspired by Jurassic Park, I had taken on the task of trying to model, texture, rig, animate and light a dinosaur. The timeline to finish it stretched out much further than I had planned. I would be lying if I said that the process didn't feel grueling and that sometimes the purpose of me doing it felt completely lost.<br />
<br />
During all that time, what kept me afloat was listening to the story of John Hammond, as wonderfully narrated by Richard Attenborough himself for the Spielberg-produced PC game "Trespasser".<br />
<br />
I listened to his entire narration over and over - perhaps more than a hundred times - about how John Hammond created InGen, set up the genetic engineering lab on Isla Sorna and cloned the first dinosaur. Like in some benevolent hay fever dream, I worked imagining myself living the story of John Hammond, bringing to life his first dinosaur. Perhaps this was a type of madness, but I finished my dinosaur project exactly as I intended it to and I am certain I wouldn't have done it without the inspiration I got from Richard Attenborough's masterful narration and portrayal of John Hammond.<br />
<br />
But at the end of what was a very difficult project for me, it is another memory of inspiration and advice from Richard Attenborough that became particularly poignant for me - and a lesson that I have yet to learn:<br />
<br />
When I was in my last year of animation school, I picked up a book at
the library about the principles of lighting for theatre. I wanted to
apply these principles to my final student film. I was surprised when I
opened the first page of the book to find that the foreword had been
written by none other than Richard Attenborough (or "John Hammond", as I
referred to him my entire childhood). I knew instantly that this was no coincidence.<br />
<br />
He closed the
foreword with one word in quotations, which he said was the most
important thing above all in everything we do: "Enjoy".<br />
<br />
I know that much more of his work and words will keep weaving themselves into my life, both personally and professionally. Thank you Richard Attenborough, for the words of wisdom and inspiration.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-518410090820851537.post-86433760814001672522013-04-15T21:57:00.004-07:002013-04-16T08:26:27.693-07:00Dinosaur Anatomy<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have just published a new site with some anatomical breakdowns I made for a personal project (a reconstruction of a Styracosaurus). I used Maya and ZBrush to create the breakdowns and the model. The muscles and bones are labeled, I hope this will be useful to other paleoartists:</div>

It is the next dinosaur I want to sculpt, I already bought the necessary materials for the armature, and tomorrow I'll get the sculpey. I thought that making a drawing (as detailed as possible) of the dinosaur would make the sculpting process faster, and take a lot of guesswork out of it. Also, I didn't depict this dinosaur with a sail on the back (as it is usually seen) because I recently read a scientific paper that said that it was more likely covered with muscle.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-518410090820851537.post-67753090903886543052008-07-22T18:52:00.000-07:002008-12-10T07:10:24.697-08:00Protoceratops Sculpture<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfoxZmD6u4EiU0e2iZczhlwVDFCwlSCUbUB3JaGLsMHnVVjbAHFMCPXKhhvzyg34J1isi6z3jCHeVqEHVFCR9h69l5AyXTGdW2A_Xt3p5l0pYfDkd-I3AWQKyFOEvKX90-obK3UDinbBsv/s1600-h/Proto_blog_1.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfoxZmD6u4EiU0e2iZczhlwVDFCwlSCUbUB3JaGLsMHnVVjbAHFMCPXKhhvzyg34J1isi6z3jCHeVqEHVFCR9h69l5AyXTGdW2A_Xt3p5l0pYfDkd-I3AWQKyFOEvKX90-obK3UDinbBsv/s200/Proto_blog_1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226022010513379042" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsl-Ox64JvaHJ5hiK4J8Y7MvPSDv22YZVpOfcv_rYEcAByWTjnjY3jAncu0Oy-ii7u_aSR33clyOBax1h14MWcYUiC6N_H3f0A0R-R10yHLwXoj04DJyO3R0VFub35bDgxp3aa7sDG2Ei_/s1600-h/Proto_blog_3.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsl-Ox64JvaHJ5hiK4J8Y7MvPSDv22YZVpOfcv_rYEcAByWTjnjY3jAncu0Oy-ii7u_aSR33clyOBax1h14MWcYUiC6N_H3f0A0R-R10yHLwXoj04DJyO3R0VFub35bDgxp3aa7sDG2Ei_/s200/Proto_blog_3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226022134204664194" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5O4G9P9_hiCOSJ4P3HUKunZHaIUwmZpA5gMhSfvm2tEifjNIbssvTaXAK5kWgx1yS2RO65IcpvJulWy-K4mbwfB7zX7AR0aR5txDqGqtVlbNnVYO4-cc_yfPqrBNwBDDxvBXFtGD-6DFG/s1600-h/Proto_blog_2.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5O4G9P9_hiCOSJ4P3HUKunZHaIUwmZpA5gMhSfvm2tEifjNIbssvTaXAK5kWgx1yS2RO65IcpvJulWy-K4mbwfB7zX7AR0aR5txDqGqtVlbNnVYO4-cc_yfPqrBNwBDDxvBXFtGD-6DFG/s200/Proto_blog_2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226022070913014930" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXhWNVOJRVDYR4GfxZYEO2grU2rwMA992zVAqsypRxzgWzbkb3ibfsK47eR66aIaPp8BjBcCPa_L0K4IoycsiDktTp7HjqfNDi06uJfv6fv2AoutrRIo6s1PHS_J8jwGDnAEThmxacJ_1X/s1600-h/Proto_blog_4.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXhWNVOJRVDYR4GfxZYEO2grU2rwMA992zVAqsypRxzgWzbkb3ibfsK47eR66aIaPp8BjBcCPa_L0K4IoycsiDktTp7HjqfNDi06uJfv6fv2AoutrRIo6s1PHS_J8jwGDnAEThmxacJ_1X/s200/Proto_blog_4.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226022193835433650" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMYc20WutlzKyWWlAEskwZBSaNLtLFvzewjj3zwEp_8LYvJnU0y8UW-etHY0hIdGZxL89N_b93_2vwR_ntFqPGBHstvbdzDtiJM-5mXoBl0rLYamfuhnxoKXEPiosaho3LxDRkvZB1U3-F/s1600-h/Proto_blog_5.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMYc20WutlzKyWWlAEskwZBSaNLtLFvzewjj3zwEp_8LYvJnU0y8UW-etHY0hIdGZxL89N_b93_2vwR_ntFqPGBHstvbdzDtiJM-5mXoBl0rLYamfuhnxoKXEPiosaho3LxDRkvZB1U3-F/s200/Proto_blog_5.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226022265050934274" border="0" /></a><br /></div>This is a Protoceratops sculpture I just finished making yesterday. I'm very happy that I got to finish it. These days really feel like the end of a big book (like Lord of The Rings big). It does feel a lot like that actually, you know that "Wow! I actually finished the book" type of feeling lol, even though it looked like such a distant thing when you were reading the first page, and it's a bit sad, because you really enjoyed reading it. But honestly, it's not just that, I also feel very proud of what me and everyone I had the luck to be around with these years have achieved. Our dreams made us go the distance!...so congrats to everyone! :)<br /><br />Oh yes, I almost forgot, this entry is about my Demo Reel and Portfolio. I recorded the footage during the Christmas break when my sister and I went to see our parents in Yucatan, Mexico. It was hard to find a slope anywhere where I lived...it's really flat in there, really beautiful, but very flat. But we were lucky enough to find this secluded place by sea that was perfect for the film.<br /><br />In the picture you can see my parents, my sister (holding one of the cardboard doubles of the egg) and I while I was putting a Christmas ornament in front of the camera as to simulate a "fish-eye" lens to get an idea of how the light looked from every direction and then be able to reproduce it in the computer (it was my teacher's idea). Hahaha, there was so much sand in there that our car got stuck...thankfully the police, who had been checking on what we were doing every now and then, helped us out :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-518410090820851537.post-11964981138269221602008-01-26T11:32:00.000-08:002008-01-26T11:42:05.958-08:00Scene 3 (Almost Done)Hey everyone! Here is one of the scenes from my film, it's not fully completed yet (I want to add a bit of sand animation around Tiri's feet...but that's a detail, and I'll add it if I have extra time). Please be patient if the video takes a while to load...thanks for watching!<br /><br />Oh, and for the BG I'm going to have actual footage, not just a still picture (this one still has Tiri's cardboard stunt double in it :P)<br /><br /><br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzTZ4lIXeSG44UK3c0159tlaamCUlx8PrS-NfA2BjD5YKp9vTOaVeMgdl5OxpJ1hbOaBuSymrIeBNZlEklKtg' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-518410090820851537.post-582816061338780272007-12-02T20:41:00.001-08:002007-12-02T20:58:50.101-08:00Animation Test: JumpHey everyone! this is just an animation test I did with the new rig for Tiri. I haven't painted the weights yet (This was done using a "split-up" version of the model). I'm just trying to get used to the controls of the new rig and see if I can improve it. First of all, I finished modeling and texturing all the characters and props for my film. The characters are:<br /><br />Tiri- A baby Tyrannosaurus Rex<br />Chihuahua- A baby Brachiosaurus<br />Buzz (a.k.a. Marie Claire :P)- A dragonfly<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqUNE5fyxu1igKjxrWEKfCgmLsEaTHWI8sRTisvMpI_19asd_eXJFJf-XWpZBC1VEYuRX4MkZLwqfymdDFt8vtMbxpKAO7Ec4WNEJyW8XlaTLAr0qD7yv8T-k5-oxVkRXrDNbRnkqUGuez/s1600-h/Chihuahua+Tiri+Buzz+Posting.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqUNE5fyxu1igKjxrWEKfCgmLsEaTHWI8sRTisvMpI_19asd_eXJFJf-XWpZBC1VEYuRX4MkZLwqfymdDFt8vtMbxpKAO7Ec4WNEJyW8XlaTLAr0qD7yv8T-k5-oxVkRXrDNbRnkqUGuez/s400/Chihuahua+Tiri+Buzz+Posting.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5136889031738016194" border="0" /></a><br />There are two versions of the egg, one "broken", for the shot when Chihuahua comes out of the egg, and a solid one, for the rest of the shots (it's easier to animate).<br /><br />I sculpted the textures for the characters and the props on clay (well, the egg on kraft paper). What I did was basically print the UVs from Maya, and then trace them onto transparent cel paper, and then built a sort of "tracing desk" so that I could sculpt the textures on clay and put the UVs on top every now and then to make sure they matched. Before going into the final textures, I did a test on a smaller piece of clay. Here are some pictures of the process:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Gks0VaXPSVBYrEAFkZY-EInv-2T9RgKuKkjyFlgiKJI6ooLoZdHS6iOrZGo-KMhHjWtmoBOLxtTvfDK2ojOhsHAuXywuFl-mmHLBAgWdTOyOF3MP3S3HqQG_M2xQABVdrJeLTF40dCWM/s1600-h/TexturesTest1.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;
